Drop Tiresome ‘Rules’ For Women at the Top

I eagerly read the Jan. 21st page-one article featuring the picture of Bonnie Fuller, chief editorial director of tabloid publisher American Media Inc. Recently, I was the one who railed at you for not putting Gail Berman’s picture on the front page when she was named chairman of Fox. As I read the impressive statistics of Fuller’s success at a number of publications, I found myself wincing at personal revelations: She sends her toast back, complains when her cappuccino has no foam, she makes business calls at midnight, and her husband is in charge of child care.

Seeing women promoted into leadership positions is what I work for. If I’m uncomfortable, what are other readers thinking? Most of us want to see women succeeding, but we still expect a CEO—if she’s a woman—to be nice and to assume certain tasks. Does this type of thinking belong in business now that half our workforce is female? It’s time for all of us to re-evaluate our logic. It’s time to drop the last vestiges of the old gender rules. I’ll go first. I like cappuccino with foam and men as co-managers of child care.
