Using Job Loss to Refocus Your Life PDF Print E-mail

The downturn in the economy is affecting everyone. You may be worried about losing your job. Or perhaps the ax has already fallen—as it has in my case. I recently lost my position as a senior executive in a brand-name company. It didn’t really surprise me. Like many companies, mine was reorganizing, downsizing, reengineering, consolidating, streamlining, rightsizing—take your pick. Although I was disappointed to lose my job (a vice president with significant responsibility), overall I felt gratified about what I’d accomplished for the company and for the value my efforts had added to the bottom line.

This pause in my professional life has allowed me to “detox” and reflect on what I truly want in life. As a single mom with an adopted daughter, I haven’t really been enjoying motherhood. And at age six, my daughter needs me even more than she did as a baby. Although I loved my job, the hours and the pressures didn’t provide much opportunity to thrive. Getting laid off has given me a chance to acknowledge, ”Okay, been there, done that, now what?"

In today’s busy world, one of the most important keys to a successful partnership is the ability to spend quality time with your mate. A couple who cannot play together are unlikely to stay together. However, the pressures on each person’s time are considerable, and being able to create time for your partner among the myriad of tasks and conflicting expectations is far from easy.

Negotiating Work-Family Issues PDF Print E-mail

Family-friendly workplace policies make good business sense. Tensions between work and home life distract; they increase stress. They are bad for families, bad for employees, and bad for employers. The Boston Bar Association’s recent study “Facing the Grail,” for example, discovered that 43 percent of associates stay less than three years at a firm. For women and minorities the figure goes even higher. The high rate of departure is a losing proposition for the firms since it takes four years on average to recoup the original investment in an associate’s training. Recognition of the costs is not limited to the professions. IBM, in fact, has been at the forefront of job sharing and telecommuting and recently targeted $25 million to expand or improve the childcare and elder care facilities on corporate campuses.

Becoming a Caregiver Without Sinking Your Career PDF Print E-mail

“I was his caregiver. Who will take care of me?” asked my younger sister. She had just received a diagnosis of Multiple Myeloma. After years of caring for her declining husband, she faced a serious health crisis of her own. As I listened to her voice on that long distance call, I volunteered to be her caregiver. Sisters help each other.

Caregiving calls on you to dig deep within yourself and give all you’ve got without expectation of return. However, caregiving need not be so altruistic that your life and career are sacrificed. Remember the admonitions of all those flight attendants to secure your own oxygen mask before helping anyone else?
